AMD investigates alleged data theft as stolen data appears for sale on BreachForums

Advance Micro Devices Inc. is reportedly investigating a claim that data from the company has been stolen in an apparent hack.

First spotted by HackManac on X Inc., the claim that AMD has been hacked and data was stolen is per a listing on the infamous hacking site BreachForums. A user by the name of "IntelBroker" claims to be selling data from an AMD data breach in June this year.

The stolen data is said to include details of future AMD products, spec sheets, employee databases, property files, ROMs, source code, firmware, and finances. The breached data includes personally identifiable information, such as user IDs, first and last names, job functions, phone numbers, emails and other details.

IntelBroker also posted screenshots of the stolen data as evidence, although notably, the employee information is tagged "inactive," suggesting that the employees listed in the database are former employees.

In response to the claim on BreachForums, a spokesperson for AMD said in a statement that "We are aware of a cybercriminal organization claiming to be in possession of stolen AMD data" and that "we are working closely with law enforcement officials and a third-party hosting partner to investigate the claim and the significance of the data."

As noted by Bloomberg, AMD shares fell 2.4% in trading Tuesday, a day that semiconductor industry shares rallied, as a seeming consequence of the report.

The hacker or hacking group known as IntelBroker has been linked to previous hacking and stolen data cases, including stolen PII belonging to members of Congress in March 2023 and the hack of General Electric Co. in November.

It also comes as no surprise that the alleged details of the stolen data were listed for sale on BreachForums, although at this point, it's probably infuriating members of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation who claimed to have taken BreachForums offline on May 15.

BreachForums was down barely two weeks following the "takedown," with the site regularly making headlines since. Notable hacks and stolen data listed on Breach Forums recently include that of BlackBerry Ltd.-owned cybersecurity company Cylance on June 11 and the 560 million records stolen from Ticketmaster Entertainment LLC on May 29.
